Brasilia – With the announcement of five more cabinet members (“ministros”) yesterday, December 21, president elect, Dilma Rousseff, now has 35 names for the top positions in her administration and only two more positions to fill to complete her cabinet: the minister of Agrarian Development and the head of the Special Secretariat for Women [note: it was initially reported that Dilma planned to add two or three more ministers to the 37 that Lula had. Those plans have been shelved for the time being]. It should be pointed out that the names are still those of nominees and must yet be officially confirmed.
Those announced yesterday were: Leônidas Cristino (PSB), the mayor of Sobral in Ceará. He was sponsored by the state governor, Cid Gomes (PSB) and will occupy the Special Secretariat for Ports [another secretariat for Airports may be created or simply united with Ports in the future].
Four-term Federal Deputy (representative), Luiz Sergio [Nobrega de Oliveira] (PT-RJ) will head the Secretariat of Institutional Relations. He is the president of the PT in the state of Rio de Janeiro and was one of the founders of the PT in the early 1980s. Presently Institutional Relations is run by Alexandre Padilha, who will become the new minister of Health.
Dilma also announced that Jorge Hage will remain as the head of the Controladoria-Geral da União (a kind of GAO watchdog agency) and that Army general, José Elito Carvalho Siqueira, will be the new head of the Office of Institutional Security (“GSI”). He commanded the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah) in 2006 and 2007.
Another member of the PSB – Socialist Party of Brazil – that will be in the cabinet is Fernando Bezerra of Pernambuco. He will head the ministry of National Integration.
