Brasília – The man president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva put in charge of the Ministry of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, will remain in the cabinet of Dilma Rousseff – but as head of the Ministry of Health.
Padilha is the youngest member of the cabinet, at 39, and is in fact a doctor who graduated from medical school at Unicamp – as a specialist in infectious diseases (“infectologista”). He did postgraduate studies at the University of São Paulo. After he became a doctor, he worked for four years in the Amazon.
Padilha was a member of the PT executive board in São Paulo and worked in the Lula presidential campaigns of 2002 and 2006. Before that, as a student leader and director of the National Student Union (“UNE”) in the late 1980s, he actively participated in the movement to impeach president Fernando Collor (he was one of the student protesters who became known as “caras pintadas”).
